How it works
A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC (the “epoch”). JavaScript and many APIs use milliseconds instead, some databases microseconds or nanoseconds: the tool detects the unit from the number of digits (10 digits ≈ seconds, 13 ≈ milliseconds). The same timestamp is the same instant everywhere — only its display depends on the time zone.
FAQ
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems storing timestamps as signed 32-bit integers overflow on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC (2147483647). Modern systems use 64-bit values.
