How it works

Percentage difference = |A − B| ÷ ((A + B) ÷ 2) × 100. It compares both values to their average, so swapping them gives the same result — useful when neither value is the “original” (two prices, two measurements). Percentage change, in contrast, depends on the direction: 40 → 60 is +50%, but 60 → 40 is −33.3%.
