How it works

Keys come from crypto.subtle.generateKey, backed by your operating system's cryptographic random generator. A 256-bit key has 2256 possible values: guessing it is impossible. The IV (initialization vector) must be unique for every message encrypted with the same key — 12 random bytes for GCM, 16 for CBC and CTR.

Treat the key like a password: store it in a secrets manager or environment variable, never in source code.
