How it works

IPv6 addresses have eight groups of four hex digits; leading zeros can be dropped and one run of zero groups can be written “::”. The compressed form follows RFC 5952 (lowercase, longest zero run). Types: global unicast (2000::/3), unique local (fc00::/7), link-local (fe80::/10), multicast (ff00::/8), loopback (::1), documentation (2001:db8::/32) and IPv4-mapped (::ffff:a.b.c.d).
