How it works

Two systems coexist. Decimal (SI) units use powers of 1,000: 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes — used by disk makers and network speeds. Binary units use powers of 1,024: 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes — what Windows calls “GB”. That's why a 1 TB drive appears as about 931 “GB”. Internet speeds are in bits: divide megabits by 8 to get megabytes.
