How it works

Each pixel becomes black if its brightness is below the threshold and white otherwise. The automatic mode uses Otsu's method, which picks the threshold that best separates dark and light areas — ideal for scanned text. Dithering spreads the rounding error to neighbouring pixels so gradients become patterns of dots, like a newspaper photo.
